I believe that this type of evaluation system will be effective as far as providing the teachers with the necessary information to improve their teaching environments. Since they are given basically a rubric of what it is they need to accomplish to achieve high scores on their evaluation, it becomes no different than the rubrics that teachers have/had given us that explained what we needed to do in order to receive a high score. I think that having this two-fold evaluation system, namely the external observer as well as taking the students' scores into account is a well-balanced approach on judging the teachers.
I feel that this system could be highly effective if implemented in other states and school districts. IMPACT focuses mainly on the growth and improvement of teachers instead of threatening job loss. While student performance is still important, this system also takes into account the performance of the teachers. While evaluations are done by principals, external observers also come in, which cuts down on bias in evaluation scores. In fact, this system seems to be very fair in its grading procedure, because teachers are informed of such expectations and scoring techniques well in advance. Although only a few teachers were interviewed in this video, all seemed in favor of this system. Perhaps the Buffalo school district should adopt IMPACT instead of firing teachers after a few years or poor test results.
After watching this video, I think that this teacher evaluation system would be very effective throughout the country in every type of school. The fact that the teacher evaluations are not solely based on one thing such as a student filling out a form but instead they are based multiple sources. They are giving five evaluations in the classroom which three are from the principle and two are from a master educator and that adds up to 35 percent of their evaluation. Then 50 percent is based on their students scores. The remaining percentage is based on the community. I like the fact that in the beginning of the year they are giving a book that tells them exactly what is expected out of them which then allows them to figure out what is expected out of their students. Another important thing is that if teachers get a low score throughout a school district, they will bring in many districts and have a professional development day allowing the teachers to learn how to fix what they are doing wrong. This allows teachers to feel more comfortable instead of making them feel uptight about being fired. Overall I think it would be a great idea to have this system throughout the country.
I feel that teacher evaluations are a great tool for students to use for the next set of kids that are coming in. This helps teachers effectively see what needs to be changed about their cirriculum an what they should keep. This ia an amazing tool and I feel that teacher evaluations should start when kids are in elementary school
I think that teacher evaluations are essential as long as teachers take them into consideration and if there is consequences for negative teacher evaluations. Having principles evaluate their staff i believe is also important and maybe most important is letting the teachers know what they're being evaluated on and that way they know what to focus on and if they do not meet the criteria than they now have the opportunity to fix the problems and make for a better more effective classroom environment.
Overall, I think the DC IMPACT system of teacher evaluations will continue to be a highly effective system. One thing that stood out to me was when one of the teachers said "I do want to be a highly effective teacher, so show me what that looks like." I think it is extremely important for teachers to know what their evaluations are based on. It was interesting to hear that all of the teachers interviewed basically knew the structure of their evaluations as well as each part's weighting. Having a principal or official observe a classroom and not ever explaining to the teacher what they were "graded" is basically pointless. Knowing what areas to improve on is the first step to creating better teaching methods, and eventually, better test scores.
