This link gives President Obama's response to the long debated issue of gender discrimination from the Augusta National Golf Club. After hearing this on the news, I immediately thought of this class because it was a reminder that gender discrimination is still prevalent in this country. This club was formed in 1933, and almost ninety years later, it still does not allow women to join. I was astonished when I had heard this because I've always taken my rights as a woman for granted. I figured that such discrimination would be illegal. However, it clearly is not, if President Obama is only allowed to give his opinion on the matter.
This is a very interesting article. It is surprising to see a place that discriminates against females in today's society. When they started their golf club it was very common to not include women, but today this is a rare thing. By not changing their policy they could argue that they are not sexist, just traditional. Although, traditionally they invite the CEO of IBM to join their club. If they do not extend an invitation to her, it will be a very public display of their discrimination against women. I think that this could be a potential opportunity for them to change their policy and allow women in. It will be interesting to see what happens with this in the upcoming months.
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of this article being a girl and loving the sport of golf. I am kind of taken aback that this club doesn't allow women. I agree with the post above that they could be considered traditional, but you would think that they wouldn't want that today. Again, I agree that if they don't send an invitation to the CEO of IBM who is a women does prove that they are discriminatory towards women. Changing their policy would be essential to their club is many aspects. If they do not change their policies, I feel as if people are going to look at their club in a whole different way.
ReplyDeleteI found this article to be very interesting and it shocked me that discrimination is still occuring in our world today. I wonder if there will ever be a time where discrimination in gender, race, social class, and religion will end. I think the policy should be changed for women to be able to participate. Both men and women are just a good at sports, where discrimination of who can play should not be allowed. There is a ton of couples who like to go golfing together and I agree with the post above, that if the club does not change their policy a lot of business will be lost.
